Jewelry Box or Valet with Removable Tray

One of a series of items based on a blanket chest. The interior of the box has a ledge towards the top that supports a shallow tray; one that can be moved back & forth or taken completely out. Jewelry Cabinet with 6 Drawers

Our latest project, a custom creation for a client in NYC. A cabinet with 6 drawers set up with dividers for everything from small earrings to large bracelets, brooches, and necklaces. The top three drawers are divided into 24 spaces with the bottom three drawers divided into 6 spaces, all with bottom padded panels of black ultrasuede. The cabinet is of quarter-sawn oak and the drawer faces are maple with walnut handles. The drawers and dividers are of poplar and each drawer has an inset guide on each side which is waxed for smooth action.

Just sold on our Etsy shop, this small box was made from discarded scraps. There's a large commercial wood shop here in town and they usually throw away anything with knots like these but we think they're beautiful. I sliced open the wood to show the knot off to its best advantage.

A pair of boxes to house custom board games. The boards roll up and store in the top half of the boxes, while the game pieces fit into the small compartments in the bottom half of the boxes. The box lids are held in place with matching pairs of magnets and there's a removable panel inside dividing the interior halves. Both boxes are constructed of solid oak, with one box having a darker finish, one a lighter finish. These were just delivered for Tintin Blackwell, a graphic designer in Sweden.

17 Boxes - An order just finished for a client who wanted a series of boxes that she could give to family members this Christmas. Each the same size but made from a variety of woods, including: walnut; oak; maple; mahogany; cherry; poplar. Finished with an eco-friendly water-based polyurethane. The lids are hinged with solid brass pins inset into the sides of the lids. This allows the lid panel to float within the top edges of the box and eliminates any hinge hardware for a clean appearance.

Keepsake box of solid oak with the lid stained black. Shown in this photo with one of our little pendants inside peeking over the edge; this is a good size to help organize important items and keep them close at hand.

This is typical of all my work, using finger joints for assembly and left visible to form a decorative edge. Handmade work is best that shows construction details. As William Morris, the preeminent 19th century Arts & Crafts designer said of his work, “Good citizen's furniture, solid and well made in workmanship and in design having nothing about it that is not easily defensible".

Wood / Fused Glass Collaboration

Another in the series of keepsake boxes combining wood & glass. The box is handcrafted of mahogany with a clear finish and the lid is stained black. The lid is cut as a frame with a recessed backboard that supports an inset panel of fused glass. The glasswork is built up using multiple layers of glass trimmed and arranged by hand to form a woodland scene of aspen trees. Fusing the multiple layers together gives the composition great depth and an almost three-dimensional quality.

On display at the Art Source Gallery in Boise, Idaho.

Keepsake Box

A small keepsake box of birds-eye maple and black walnut. The walnut is from a tree across the street in our neighborhood that died and was scheduled to be taken out by the city. I contacted the city forester about reclaiming some of the wood and he was gracious enough to allow me to cart off a good quantity as they were cutting it down. After letting it age for about a year or two, I started cutting open some of the smaller pieces and was very surprised how intricate and colorful the wood grain was. I sliced the wood into quarter-inch panels and after planing, assembled with alternating box joints. The lid is from a small piece of birds-eye maple left over from another project.

If you're interested in local eco-friendly sources for materials, this would be an approach to consider.

Altogether, this piece makes good use of materials that might otherwise have ended up in a scrap pile. The finish is a very eco-friendly water-based polyurethane.

Fused Glass and Wood Collaboration

This is the latest in a collaboration between myself, JM Craftworks and a fused-glass artist here in Idaho, Wild Ideas Glass. We've combined wood & glass by using boxes with lids that frame her beautiful fused glass landscapes. The first photo is a box just finished from a series of 18 that are ready for the glass landscapes and the second photo shows a completed piece from an earlier order showing how the box will look after the glass is installed. Each landscape is different and is hand crafted using multiple layers of glass. The glass is permanently bonded to the lid resulting in a functional item with beautiful artwork displayed. The boxes provide functional storage but primarily are there to act as an exaggerated desktop frame to show off the glasswork.

A handmade jewelry cabinet entirely constructed of reclaimed wood and stained black. The walnut, oak and maple are from cut-offs from a local wood shop and the fabric is from remnants from the Boise Reuse Market. This is our design and was fabricated completely by us from scratch in our shop.

The fabric inserts are wrapped around padding and protect both the top compartment and the drawer to cushion anything placed inside. Both inserts are removable and the drawer can be taken completely out of the cabinet for easy access. The hardwood is hand sanded and finished inside & out with a clear ecofriendly water based polyurethane.

Dimensions: 10 inches (254mm) long x 7 inches (178mm) wide x 3 inches (76mm) tall. Both the top compartment and the lower drawer are 1 inch (25mm) deep.

This particular piece is fashioned after a Shaker Blanket Chest which had a lidded top compartment with a drawer underneath.

A custom frame, cut in the gallery style, sized 7"x13". These are our design and use standard steel spring clips on the back to make assembly quick & easy. Each frame is hand-cut in our shop from raw stock and includes acid-free backboard and UV-shielded acrylic. Also included is a mounting cleat which will work either vertically or horizontally and all necessary hardware. Ready to install right out of the box.

A solid American black walnut & maple jewelry box, completely handmade and using recycled wood. The walnut is from a tree in our neighborhood taken out by the city and the city forester was good enough to allow me to salvage sections as they took it out. Quilted Wall Hanging

Three squares for three maple leaves, cut and stitched in serene colors and fabrics. The fabric leaves were cut using an actual leaf as the pattern. Machine quilting flows freely around the leaves, and is unique to each square.

The individual squares are encased in 100% cotton borders. A combination of vintage fabrics and selections from the Boise ReUse Market, as well as other fabrics make up the leaves and backgrounds.

Presented in a handmade walnut frame cut in a gallery style with a clear finish.

The latest in a running collaboration with a fused-glass artist. This is the first of a set of eleven boxes of various sizes & shapes that will be finished this September. The box is constructed from a beautiful oak burl that I sliced into panels to form the four sides of the box. The lid is made of walnut and the fused glasswork is approx. 5" x 8" and is inset in the lid. Beautiful design work used in the glass and the colors really make it pop.

Two of the latest boxes made in collaboration with Wild Ideas Glass. These are how the finished pieces go together, with a beautiful collage of fused glass framed in the lids. The glasswork uses several layers of glass and has a fantastic transparency and depth.

A box designed for a local glass artist. One of a set of boxes that will have a glass mural inset into the lid. The lid is cut as a frame with a recessed center to house the glass art work. This box was designed around a very nice knot in a section of oak with beautiful patterns radiating out from the center. The front and back sides were resawn from one piece of wood and if you look through the knot in the front, you can see all the way through the box and out the back.

Shadowbox and Shelves

Latest commission is for a Shadow Box Display Case and 2 Display Shelves, all in matching dark oak. Here's photos of the set, finished on 05/27. I'm using some of my camera collection to show the scale of the shelves but the client will be using the 2 shelves & shadowbox to display a handmade chess set. This was a great project to work on and I used quarter-sawn oak with a dark arts & crafts finish. We're big fans of this style and love the look of everything about it.

Colonial Milk Paint

Before there was a large commercial paint industry, early American woodworkers used milk paint on their furniture.

When you see the beautiful matte antique colors on early American woodwork, chances are you are looking at a variation of milk paint. This historical paint has advantages over modern paints, it is very eco-friendly with no noxious vapors released during manufacture, application, or curing. This predates modern latex paints and was used in many early American pieces. It is completely non-toxic and is one of the longest-lasting paints known.

We mixed our own formula using commonly-found ingredients and added color using artist’s acrylic paints. Each batch of paint was hand-mixed, just enough for the project at hand, and discovered that the colors would vary a bit from one batch to the next, which is in keeping with our goal of making each item unique. The resulting colors have a soft warm nostalgic antique quality and we finished them with a thin coat of the same water-based satin polyurethane finish we use on all our woodwork, resulting in a reliable finish that is sound for the environment as well as durable in everyday use. Hoping to have a chance to work these colors into more items in the future.

Collaboration - Wood & Glass

Just finished a set of boxes for a local glass artist. The lids are designed to work as a frame and to house her glasswork, and are cut with mitered corners and a 3/16" deep recess in the center to inset the glass panel. You can see her beautiful artwork at: http://wildideasglass.com

The boxes are constructed of oak, walnut & maple, with pieces selected for interesting grain patterns & colors, and each will have a glass panel inset in the lid. Each box is handbuilt and assembled with staggered box joints, then finished with a clear satin water-based polyurethane.

As you can see from the three finished examples at the top, her glasswork is very beautiful and each is cut to fit precisely within the frame of the lid. Each collage is backed by an opaque layer of glass and is bonded to the wood.

A great commission for a series of 9 keepsake boxes for a client who wanted a set, but not everything exactly the same. Using oak, walnut, and a few small mahogany tabs for handles, each box also has a bottom panel on the inside that is lined with microsuede. These will be used to store small mementos, photos, and other items of special significance.

Double Shadow Boxes

This is a pair of hand built custom Shadow Boxes, 10 inches (254mm) wide x 10 inches (254mm) tall x 10 inches (254mm) deep. Entirely handcrafted of solid oak and finished with clear polyurethane. This is a custom commission designed to display two trophies.

The back panel is made of black mat board which attaches to the inside using hook and loop fasteners. The back panel is cut slightly smaller than the interior of the box and appears to float inside.

ACEO with Custom Frame

Inspired by nature and the colors and textures of fabrics, this landscape is an original work of art, handmade and stitched onto acid-free watercolor paper for backing. It is hand signed and dated by the artist on the back and is mounted in a custom frame of solid oak.

The frame can stand either vertically or horizontally on a tabletop or shelf. Overall size of the frame is 3 5/8 inches (92 mm) x 4 5/8 inches (117 mm). Included is a solid brass rod to use as a stand to display your frame upright on a shelf or desktop. Also included are Neodymium magnets inset in the back to allow you to attach your framed artwork to any steel surface such as a file cabinet in your office. Our frames are completely designed and handcrafted by us in our shop using traditional woodworking methods & tools. (No lasers!)

These are basic instructions from my experiences on generating a data feed to submit to Google. This will give the google search engine exactly what it needs to place your items for sale as high as possible in the general search results and will also include your items in Google Base, which is Google’s shopping search. Plus once this is set up you can go into your Base account and see how many times each individual item has appeared in a search and if someone has clicked on it to go to your shop.
